Biography Alfred Edwin Longueil was born on April 3, 1894 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, and received his B.A. from Boston University and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. He was named assistant professor of English at UCLA in1922, and became a full professor in 1947. He served as chair of the English department from 1936-45, and was known for his lectures on Chaucer.
